How to feed your winter skin & hair

skinfoodWinter is when my naturally dry skin really starts to lose it! The cooler temperatures and drier air take their toll quickly and my skin becomes dehydrated and itchy overnight. Sound familiar?

When the weather changes, it’s time to change your beauty routine and start feeding and nurturing your skin and hair from both the inside as well as the outside to keep them glowing and healthy.

Feed your body on the inside by including plenty of pure, filtered water and essential fatty acids to your diet to help improve the lustre of your hair and the texture of your skin. Essential fatty acids are found in oily fish such as tuna, sardines, herring and mackerel; flax and chia seed oils; and nuts and seeds. Add pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, avocado, raw vegetables and your skin will glow. Protein-rich foods such as fish, lean meat, chicken, tofu, legumes, nuts, seeds, eggs and dairy products also boost hair health, as does silica, which is found in oats, brown rice and bananas.

Zinc is an important mineral for scalp health and helps stimulate hair growth and can be found in beef, chicken, legumes, eggs, nuts and seeds. Vitamin A is also great for a healthy scalp, as it keeps hair roots lubricated so try to include milk, cheese, eggs and fish liver oils in your diet to make sure you’re getting enough.

Feed your body on the outside by using everyday products that are gentle, nourishing and as natural as possible.

First up, your skin will need a polish with a gentle, natural exfoliating scrub a few times a week then moisturise, moisturise, moisturise to keep dryness and wrinkles at bay. Use simple nourishing products that are made from natural oils and butters that combine to deeply penetrate the underlying tissues and form a protective layer against the elements to help skin retain moisture, elasticity and keep it looking supple and radiant.
Oils such as jojoba, rosehip, sweet almond and of course coconut are ideal as they contain essential fatty acids and skin friendly vitamins and antioxidants that assist with skin repair and conditioning and the formation of collagen. Cocoa and shea butter are both fantastic natural moisturisers due to their ability to nourish and hydrate. They both contain essential fatty acids and shea butter is chock full of vitamins A and E, which strengthen your skin and help it repair damage.

Hair can start to dry out and become dull looking in the winter so keep it trimmed and use a mild, nourishing shampoo that’s gentle on the hair. Avoid washing your hair every day to prevent stripping it of natural oils. Once a week or so, apply coconut oil as a treatment to hair and scalp, wrap and leave overnight or for a couple of hours then wash and condition as usual. Your hair will be softer, shinier and more lustrous.

At Coconut Tree Products we are committed to keeping it simple and real with products that contain only natural ingredients selected for their powers to nurture and protect your body and that also are a delight to use every day.
